If your tires have been around a while, it’s smart to occasionally check up on them and evaluate the depth of their tread. Don’t worry, you don’t need any expensive or advanced tools. All you need is a penny.

Take that penny and place it upside-down in the tread of your tire. Take a close look and you should see that at least part of Abraham Lincoln’s head is covered up. If you can see Honest Abe’s entire head, you have a problem. The tread on that tire is far too shallow and it’s time for some replacements.

Uneven Wear and Tear

You should also keep an eye out for uneven wear and tear. Your tires should all be wearing down at roughly the same rate, and wear should be even across the surface of each tire.
