MAZDA Brand Glossary: Key Terms to Know

Customer at Mazda dealership

If you're shopping for a new Mazda vehicle, you've likely come across a few terms that aren't immediately self-explanatory. Mazda uses a distinct vocabulary to describe its all-wheel drive systems, technology, and safety features, and understanding these terms can help you know what you’re getting in your next vehicle. Hubler Mazda has put together this glossary to help.

i-ACTIV AWD®

Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD® system anticipates road conditions before traction is lost rather than reacting after the fact. The system uses 27 sensors to monitor variables like steering angle, wiper activation, and outside temperature, predicting ideal torque distribution between the front and rear wheels in real time. Available on models like the Mazda CX-50, this proactive approach delivers confident handling across a wide range of driving conditions, from wet pavement to light snow.

i-ACTIVSENSE®

i-Activsense® is the umbrella term for Mazda safety features available across the current lineup. Depending on the model and trim, i-Activsense® can include Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart Brake Support, and Lane Departure Warning, all designed to support the driver in a range of situations. These systems work together to reduce the risk of common driving incidents.

G-Vectoring Control Plus®

G-Vectoring Control Plus® is a chassis technology that subtly adjusts engine torque in response to steering input, shifting weight to the front tires for improved grip through corners. The system also applies light brake pressure to the outer front wheel as a vehicle exits a turn, stabilizing the body for a more connected, confident feel behind the wheel.

SKYACTIV®-Drive

SKYACTIV®-Drive is Mazda's automatic transmission, engineered to behave more like a traditional torque converter at low speeds for smoothness while shifting with the direct, responsive feel typically associated with a manual gearbox. The transmission uses a wider gear ratio range than many competitors, helping to improve both acceleration and overall efficiency without sacrificing refinement.

Mazda Connect™

Mazda Connect™ is the infotainment system found in Mazda vehicles, integrating navigation, audio, and smartphone connectivity into one interface. Many models support Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ through Mazda Connect™, controlled through a combination of touchscreen, voice command, and a dial-based commander control depending on the model.
