The Mazda Miata is one of the most iconic and unique performance vehicles in history. It continues to impress on tracks around the world and remains a fan favorite of sports car enthusiasts. Early History
The Mazda Miata was introduced to the world in the 1980s, but the concept came about almost a decade earlier. A Motor Trend Magazine journalist named Bob Hall first introduced the idea of a roadster to rival the classic British sportscars, which were starting to wane in popularity. Eventually Hall went on to work for Mazda, and for more than a decade, ideas were exchanged about what a Mazda sportscar could be.
In 1989, the Mazda MX-5 was introduced to the world – and to great success. The first generation of this vehicle was in production from 1989 to 1997 and won numerous expert awards during that time. The second generation ran from 1998 to 2005, with changes to its style, performance capability, and technology. Notably, the retractable headlamps, inspired by British sports cars, were removed due to safety guidelines, and the vehicle became more powerful overall.
Modern History
Since 2005, there have been two more generations of Mazda Miata. The third generation lasted from 2005 to 2015, and the fourth-generation models are still being produced today. In 2016, the one-millionth model was produced, and the vehicle continues to win awards, including the 2016 World Car of the Year award and a 2024 Editor’s Choice Top Pick distinction by Car and Driver Magazine.
